Initiation Service:
Service for a Girl Becoming a CGIT Member

This is a basic service for: (a) welcoming new members, (b) forming a new group and/or (c) welcoming new leaders.

Have table prepared with an open Bible and the Purpose cards and pins to be given to the new members. leader stands at one side of table, the President and the Secretary at the other side. Members stand so as to complete the circle. They should be wearing the uniform, but no pin.
Leader Who are we who stand here together?
Circle We are Canadian Girls in Training.
Leader As Canadian girls, for what are we training?
Circle We are training so that we may live to the fullest and best of our powers, as God would have us live.
Leader Under whose leadership are we training?
Circle Under the leadership of Jesus.
Leader What is the Purpose which governs us?
Circle As a Canadian Girl in Training ... (Purpose is repeated in unison by all except new members)
Leader Canadian Girls in Training, we are gathered here to receive new members into our group, and to rededicate ourselves to the fulfilling of our Purpose.

Will the new members please come through the circle and take their places here in front of the table.

(New members come in and stand in a row facing the table.)

Leader (to new members) You have heard the Purpose which governs us as Canadian Girls in Training. Are you willing to accept this Purpose and make it your own? If so, will you answer now, saying, "God helping me, this will be my Purpose."
New Members God helping me, this will be my Purpose.
Leader If we are to fulfil our Purpose, we must understand it. Let us examine it now, in each part, and pledge ourselves to fufill every part to the utmost of our ability, God helping us.

As each question is asked, new members will please answer aloud. And as our new members are taking these vows, the rest of us will dedicate ourselves in silence. (pause)

In Luke 2:52 we read: "And as Jesus continued to grow in body and mind, He grew in the love of God and of those who knew Him." Jeasus was young like us, and had to grow; let us learn from Him. He is our Friend; let us trust Him. He is our Saviour; let us love Him. He is our God; let us worship Him. As Canadian Girls in Training, we follow Jesus as Leader. We must look always to Him, depend upon Him, and obey Him. As Canadian Girls in Training, will you train under the leadership of Jesus.

New Members We will train under the leadership of Jesus.
Leader As Canadian Girls in Training, it is our Purpose to CHERISH HEALTH. St Paul writes: "I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to His service and pleasing to Him. This is the true worship that you should offer." If we are to have healthy bodies, we must keep them clean and strong, do nothing foolish or harmful to them, but live as we know is best for us. As Canadian Girls in Training, will you Cherish Health?
New Members We will Cherish Health.
Leader As Canadian Girls in Training, it is our Purpose to SEEK TRUTH. Jesus said: "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." In school, in Sunday School, at home, abroad -- wherever there are things to be learned: to be learned easily, because they are delightful to us; to be learned with difficulty because we find them hard or uninteresting -- wherever there are discoveries to be made which lead us further -- there is the path of the truth. As Canadian Girls in Training, will you Seek Truth?
New Members We will Seek Truth.
Leader As Canadian Girls in Training, it is our Purpose to KNOW GOD. Jesus said, "Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father." It is in the face of Jesus Christ that we shall find the knowledge of God. We must study with a whole heart to know Jesus more intimately every day, and in this way, come to know God. As Canadian Girls in Training, will you seek to Know God through Jesus Christ.
New Members We will seek to Know God through Jesus Christ.
Leader As Canadian Girls in Training, it is our Purpose to SERVE OTHERS. Jesus said: "Whenever you did this for one of the least important...you did it for me!" Every loving thing we do for another, Jesus accepts as done for Himself. Every wrong we do, we do to Him. In the service of Jesus, we must be humble and unselfish, despising no one; remembering His story of the good Samaritan, and practicing its lesson in our lives every day. As Canadian Girls in Training, will you Serve Others?
New Members We will Serve Others.

(Leader, President and Secretary step forward).

Leader As Canadian Girls in Training, you are welcomed now to this, your own group, and to the wide community of CGIT all across Canada. Please come forward as your name is called. After you have been received, take your place in the circle as a member of this group.

(Holding up CGIT pin). This CGIT pin which will be given to you is round. A circle can be a symbol of friendship, of oneness of spirit. For this reason, groups often form a circle for opening and closing ceremonies. Within the circle on the pin is a four-part square. It symbolizes the four-fold Purpose of CGIT which is to develop wholeness of life-physical, intellectual, social and spiritual.

(Leader reads names one by one. As her name is read, each girl comes forward. The President fastens a CGIT pin about halfway down the left side of her middy tie. The Secretary hands her a CGIT Purpose card. When all have taken their places in the circle, the ceremony closes as follows:)

Leader We are a few among the thousands of Canadian Girls in Training who live in every part of Canada. Think, now, of all those others standing with us as we bring our service to a close. (Pause)
Leader What is our Purpose as Canadian Girls in Training?
Circle As a Canadian Girl in Training...(Purpose is repeated in unison)
Leader Who will help us to keep our promises and fulfil our Purpose?
Circle God will help us to keep our promises and fulfil our Purpose.
Leader Let us pray and ask God's help:

Almighty God who has given us our lives with their powers of growth in body and mind, we offer to You our minds, that You may fill them with knowledge of Yourself and Your perfect will for us. We offer to You our bodies that You may keep them pure and strong. Keep us true to the Purpose of our group. Teach us as a group of girls to develop in our understanding of the needs of others and the means You supply for their help. Teach us to help each other and to make the spirit of our Purpose known and felt in our homes, our church, and our community. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Leader Let us sing the CGIT Hymn.
Notes on the Ceremony
New members should have attended CGIT at least four to six weeks and know the CGIT Purpose, verse and hymn. They have learned some basic CGIT history and correct way to wear the middy. All should stand throughout the ceremony--it is short enough to allow this. The deepest solemnity should be observed. (The brief responses could be memorized by the group.) you may adapt this service to suite the needs of your group.
